Task

The assignment from PEXO was clear - to elevate the website of the e-shop to a new level, not only with the goal of gaining more orders but also to provide customers with a simpler and more enjoyable shopping experience. The solution, which will also relieve the administrators of the e-shop, is the implementation of automatic product recommendations based on artificial intelligence, which we have decided to implement in the PEXO e-shop.

Recommended products are displayed in a large product detail, where the website visitor can find tips on the range of products that other customers commonly purchase along with the selected product. Effective cross-selling is achieved through a small product detail carousel.

Pop-up window

The second place where we decided to implement the recommendation tool is a pop-up window. It serves as a confirmation of adding the item to the cart and also as a gateway to further actions. These actions include the option to complete the purchase and be redirected to the shopping cart, return to browsing other products, or access the list of recommended products that might be of interest based on the user's selection.

The recommendation tool has found its placement even in the last step of the purchasing process - in the shopping cart, as part of the right sidebar menu. At this moment, the customer also has the opportunity to add products to their order that the tool evaluates as the most likely ones that might interest them.

Key findings for the implementation of a recommendation tool

This project confirmed the fact that a recommendation tool has its justification in multiple places on the website. Through collaboration with PEXO, we discovered that the pop-up window achieved the best results in terms of the placement of the recommendation tool. During the observed one-month period, this element, in combination with artificial intelligence, generated up to 8.7% of the turnover share. In comparison to recommendations in large detail and the shopping cart, it was the most effective.

Thanks to relevant recommendations, for example, a customer purchasing a pen also added related products such as ink or a pencil to their shopping cart. The e-commerce platform successfully utilized cross-selling without the need for administrator intervention or complex product pairing settings. The conversion rate of the pop-up window achieved remarkable results due to the recommendation tool displaying complementary products that are lower in price.
