Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)

Veronika Verešová

What does it mean

Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) is a universal communication standard that allows AI agents to make purchases directly in the environment where the customer is currently communicating. This protocol, developed by leaders such as OpenAI and Stripe, changes the way e-shops sell their goods. Thanks to ACP, the customer no longer needs to leave the chat window (e.g., in ChatGPT) to go to your website, add items to the cart, and manually pay for them. The protocol ensures that the entire transaction takes place directly "inside" the conversation.

More info

The protocol acts as an intelligent bridge connecting three parties: the customer (their intent), the AI platform (e.g., OpenAI), and the payment infrastructure (Stripe).

When a customer expresses a purchase intent (e.g., "I need this child car seat we talked about"), ACP verifies the user's identity in the background, checks availability in the merchant's catalog, and securely transmits the information needed for checkout. For the consumer, this means a frictionless purchase, where the line between searching for information and the actual purchase is completely blurred.

The main goal of ACP is to enable so-called headless commerce for AI. This means that the transaction — from product selection, through availability verification, to final payment and order confirmation — proceeds smoothly within a single "thread" of conversation, without redirecting the customer to an external merchant website.

ACP does not operate in isolation but connects three key worlds:

  1. AI Orchestrator (e.g., OpenAI): Understands the customer's intent ("I want a gift for my wife for our anniversary") and searches for suitable solutions.

  2. Commerce infrastructure (e.g., Shopify): Provides the agent with access to current catalogs, stock levels, and logistics options.

  3. Payment layer (e.g., Stripe): Ensures secure transmission of financial resources and identification data.

In practice, ACP defines how an AI agent should request a price from an e-shop, how the e-shop should respond with a shipping offer, and how a secure payment token should be generated. This entire process occurs in milliseconds and is almost invisible to the user.

Why ACP is changing the foundations of digital marketing

The previous model of the internet was built on "clicks." ACP moves us into a world where the most valuable currency is direct conversion at the point of interest.

Key impacts on the e-commerce ecosystem:

  • Unbundling the purchase process: The purchase is separated from visiting the website. E-shops cease to be the target destination and become providers of data and logistics for AI agents.

  • End of abandoned carts: ACP eliminates the friction associated with registration, logging in, and filling out delivery details on each e-shop separately. Data is securely transmitted by the protocol.

  • Cross-merchant shopping: Thanks to ACP, an agent can assemble a shopping cart from products from five different sellers, and the customer pays for it with a single action directly in the chat. The protocol then distributes the orders to individual merchants.

  • Change from SEO to "Agent SEO": Companies will no longer only compete to be seen by humans in search engines but to have their systems communicate with AI agents through ACP and offer them machine-readable data in real-time.
