CSS

What does it mean

CSS or Cascading Style Sheets is a language without which the internet would be a dull and unattractive place. Imagine a website as a house. HTML would be the bricks, foundations, and walls – the structure. And CSS? It's the paint on the walls, wallpaper, furniture, curtains, and all the decoration that makes a house a home. In other words, CSS is responsible for the visual appearance, layout, and presentation of everything you see on a webpage.

More info

Without CSS, every website would just be a collection of black text on a white background with blue underlined links. It is CSS that gives the web style, aesthetics, and functionality, which affects the overall user experience (UX).

So what does CSS enable?

  • Defining appearance: With CSS, you can set text colors, backgrounds, font types and sizes, margins, spacing, shadows, and many other visual attributes for any element on the page.

  • Content layout: CSS allows you to arrange elements on the page exactly as you need. You can create columns, rows, arrange items into a grid (CSS Grid) or flexibly (Flexbox), ensuring a clear and logical arrangement of content.

  • Responsive design: One of the most important tasks of CSS is to ensure that a website displays correctly on various devices and screen sizes – whether it's a computer monitor, tablet, or smartphone. Using Media Queries in CSS, the page adapts and provides an optimal user experience on every device. This is also crucial for SEO, as Google favors mobile-responsive websites.

  • Interactivity and animations: Although interactivity is primarily controlled by JavaScript, CSS also allows for creating subtle animations, transitions, and effects that enhance the UI and make the web more dynamic and attractive.

  • Efficient maintenance: Thanks to the separation of styles from structure (HTML), maintaining and updating the web is much easier. Just change one line in the CSS file, and the changes will reflect on all pages using that style. This saves time for front-end developers and reduces costs.

CSS is an essential tool for every front-end developer and a key pillar of modern web design. It allows for creating not only beautiful but also highly functional and customizable websites that are pleasant to use and support your online marketing goals and conversions.
