200 code (OK)
What does it mean
HTTP 200 (OK) is a server status code that means the request was successfully processed and the server returned the requested content.
It is the most common and at the same time the most desired http 200 status code, which signals that the page is functioning correctly, is accessible, and can be loaded without problems by both users and search engines.

What does the HTTP 200 OK status code mean?
HTTP 200 OK means that:
- the server received the request,
- processed it without error,
- returned valid content (e.g., an HTML page).
From the user's perspective, this is a normal state - the page loads without issues. From the search engines' perspective, it is a signal that the URL is valid and can be indexed.
Every page you want to display in search should return an http 200 status.
Difference between HTTP 200 and 201: When is a request successful?
Although both codes belong to the 2xx status code category, they have different meanings.
- HTTP 200 OK: the request was successfully processed and content was returned.
- HTTP 201 Created: the request led to the creation of a new resource (e.g., in API)
The difference between http 200 vs 201 is thus in what happens on the server:
- 200 = returning existing content
- 201 = created new content
In practice, you encounter code 201 mainly in API or backend operations, not in regular web browsing.
The significance of 2xx codes for browsers and Google bots
HTTP 2xx codes indicate successful request processing. Besides 200, this includes:
- 201 (Created),
- 204 (No Content).
For browsers and Googlebot, it is a clear signal that everything went correctly.
For Google, it means:
- the page is accessible,
- the content can be processed,
- the URL can be indexed.
If a page does not return the correct http 200 status, it can lead to crawling or indexing issues.
Why is status 200 the foundation of healthy SEO and a fast web?
From an SEO perspective, HTTP 200 is a basic prerequisite for a properly functioning website.
Every important page should:
- return a 200 status code,
- be accessible without redirects or errors,
- provide relevant content.
A common issue in practice is the so-called false 200: for example, when a page with error content (e.g., product does not exist) still returns code 200 instead of 404. This can lead to the indexing of low-quality pages.
It is equally true that:
- excessive redirects slow down loading,
- incorrect status codes complicate crawling.
A correctly set http 200 ok is therefore the foundation not only of SEO but also of the overall technical quality of the website.
