410 code (Gone)
What does it mean
HTTP 410 (Gone) is a server status code that means the requested content has been permanently removed and will no longer be available.
Unlike the common 404 error, which says "page not found," code 410 clearly signals that the page existed but was deliberately removed without replacement.

What does the HTTP 410 Gone status code mean?
HTTP 410 Gone is among the 4xx status codes and is used in situations where you want to explicitly state that the page has been permanently removed.
From the server's perspective, it means:
- the content was once here,
- it was intentionally removed,
- it is not expected to return.
It doesn't necessarily mean there is no replacement – but if there is, it's usually better to use a redirect (301) rather than 410.
Difference between error 404 and 410: When is a page gone forever?
The difference between 404 and 410 is mainly in the signal towards search engines:
- 404 Not Found – the page was not found (it may be a temporary state)
- 410 Gone – the page was intentionally and permanently removed
For Google, 410 is a stronger signal that the URL should disappear from the index.
Usage in practice:
- 404 → when you are unsure or it's an error
- 410 → when you are consciously cleaning content and know it won't return
4xx status codes and the impact of error 410 on web indexing
HTTP 4xx codes address the availability of pages – whether they can be accessed or not.
With HTTP 410, the effect is quite direct:
- Google will remove the URL from the index faster,
- it will gradually stop crawling it,
- it will focus on other, relevant pages.
In practice, 410 is mainly used for:
- removed products without replacement,
- old landing pages,
- cleaning outdated content.
Important rule:
- if the page has a replacement → use 301 redirect
- if it doesn't and you no longer want it → use 410
This way, you give search engines a clear and unambiguous signal about what should happen with the given URL.
